Catalyst 6000 Family Supervisor Engine IA Cisco

The new Supervisor Engine IA utilizes next-generation ASIC technology, building upon the original Supervisor Engine I to provide enhanced quality of service (QoS) to enable end-to-end support for mission-critical traffic. This new Supervisor Engine IA delivers the most advanced intelligent switching available in the industry, providing per-port application recognition, admission control, prioritization and policing with multiple hardware queues to minimize network congestion and packet latency. This advanced QoS support is essential for enabling network-wide deployment of mission-critical applications and Enterprise voice services and solutions.

The PFC for the Supervisor Engine IA Enables Application-Aware Switching

The Policy Feature Card (PFC) is an integral part of the CiscoAssure end-to-end quality of service (QoS) and policy based intelligent networking solution. When ordered with a Catalyst 6000 Supervisor IA line card, the PFC can identify user applications and classify traffic with the appropriate priority level. The PFC in conjunction with Cisco's LocalDirector, is capable of providing wire speed Server Load Balancing (SLB) at 15 Mpps. The PFC also enables admission control in the wiring closet to prevent unauthorized applications from being allowed onto the network. In addition the PFC supports advanced QoS features such as packet classification and marking, scheduling, and congestion avoidance. These features, when combined with the advanced security features of the PFC, make the Catalyst® 6000 Family switch the most advanced switch in the industry by providing enhanced intelligent network services at wire speeds.

Deployable on the Catalyst 6000 Supervisor Engine IA, the PFC extends the features and functionality of the award-winning Catalyst 6000 Family. The PFC provides new enhanced policy based QoS and security features while continuing to provide those features commonly used in wiring closets designs such as protocol filtering, Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) snooping, and enhanced multicast packet replication. The PFC provides all these services when installed on the Supervisor IA.

No additional hardware components are required to provide these intelligent network services; however, with the addition of an Multilayer Switching Feature Card (MSFC), the PFC also supports Multilayer Switching (MLS) for IP, IPX®, and IP Multicast at 15 Mpps.

Advanced Packet-Filtering Security Features

Traditionally, switches operated at Layer 2 only, switching traffic within a VLAN and routers routed traffic between VLANs.

The Catalyst 6000 Family switch with either the MSFC or the PFC can implement access control lists using Layer 3 and Layer 4 packet filters without performance degradation. This includes both packets bridged within a VLAN (with the PFC) and packets routed between VLANs (with the MSFC).

ACLs that are defined on the router VLAN interfaces to access control routed traffic between VLANs are called IOS access control lists. ACLs that are applied within a VLAN are called VLAN ACLs (VACLs).

Catalyst 6000 Family switches support the following ACLs:

You can configure VACLs on the switch to apply to all packets that are routed into or out of a VLAN or are bridged within a VLAN. VACLs are strictly for security packet filtering and redirecting traffic to specific physical switch ports. Unlike IOS ACLs, VACLs are not defined by direction (input or output).

You can configure VACLs on Layer 3 addresses for IP and IPX. All other protocols are access controlled through MAC addresses and Ethertype using MAC VACLs (IP and IPX traffic is not access controlled by MAC VACLs). You can enforce VACLs only on packets going through the Catalyst 6000 Family switch; you cannot enforce VACLs on traffic between hosts on a hub or another switch connected to the Catalyst 6000 Family switch.

MSFC Ordering Information

Software for the MSFC must be ordered separately, and is described below. Note that in a redundant Supervisor configuration, each MSFC must be ordered with the appropriate software feature set and feature license.

Both the MSFC and the PFC require the 5.3CSX release or higher running on the Supervisor. Please upgrade the Supervisor to the 5.3CSX image or higher before installing the Multilayer Switching Feature Card or the Policy Feature on the Supervisor. Use of BGP, EGP, or ISIS routing protocols on the MSFC requires the purchase of the InterDomain Routing Feature License. One InterDomain Routing Feature License is required per MSFC (for example. a chassis with redundant supervisors DOES require two licenses if each MSFC is intended to use BGP, EGP, or ISIS). Use of mini-RMON on the Catalyst 6000 and 6500 Series switches requires the purchase of the RMON Agent License. Only one RMON Agent License is required per chassis (i.e. a chassis with redundant supervisors does NOT require two licenses). Licensing is based on the honor system.

Catalyst 6000 Family Multilayer Switch Module

The WS-X6302-MSM Multilayer switch module (MSM) for Catalyst 6000 Family switches combines sophisticated Cisco IOS® software features with advanced ASIC technology to support wire-speed multiprotocol routing in a compact, manageable platform. The MSM enables Catalyst 6000 Family customers to deploy very high-performance multiprotocol, multilayer switch services in the distribution/backbone of their network to support wiring closet switches.

The MSM requires a single slot (with no slot dependency) in any Catalyst 6000 (WS-C6006 and WS-C6009) or Catalyst 6500 (WS-C6506 and WS-C6509) Series platform.

The MSM module was designed with fully integrated Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC) enabling aggregate throughput of up to six million packets per second for Layer 3 switching (IP, IPX®, and IP multicast). Combined with industry-leading IOS software, the high performance MSM enables the Catalyst 6000 Family to be particularly effective as a backbone/distribution switch.

Key Benefits

Industry-Leading Layer 3 with Cisco IOS Software

The MSM supports feature-rich IP, IPX, and IP multicast Layer 3 switching without sacrificing the performance required in a scalable backbone/distribution platform. This unique combination of performance and flexibility enables customers to integrate the Catalyst 6000 Family into existing IOS network configurations while at the same time scaling their backbone capacity to gigabit speeds. Routing protocols supported in the MSM module include:

Additional IOS protocols supported in the Catalyst 6000 Family MSM module include:

Wire Speed IPX Support

The Catalyst 6000 Family MSM module is also a full-featured IPX router. The MSM provides basic services such as Novell network RIP and Service Advertising Protocols (SAPs), and Novell Enhanced IGRP, as well as route distribution among all of these protocols. In addition, the MSM supports the following features to scale Novell networks:

Multilayer Services IP Multicast Switching and Routing

The MSM module supports IP multicast at wire speeds across the multigigabit Catalyst 6000 Family backplane. As multicast applications such as Microsoft NetShow and NetMeeting become more widely deployed, end-to-end multicast support becomes increasingly important with multicast routing protocols, which are integral for a consistent, end-to-end multicast solution. The MSM supports both Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) sparse and dense modes and Distance Vector Multicast Routing Protocol (DVMRP) interoperability for legacy applications. The MSM provides support for IGMP, Versions 1 and 2, and CGMP server capabilities for integrating IP multicast support with Catalyst® wiring closet switches. These protocols are necessary not only for IP multicast clients to join groups but also for efficient leave processing, which is necessary to save bandwidth and end-station CPU cycles.

Advanced Management for Critical Backbone Switch Availability

The MSM module in the Catalyst 6000 Family supports a wide variety of CiscoAssure Policy Networking management tools and applications to enable fault management, configuration management, performance management, security management, and other functions. These network management applications are critical in backbone switch configurations with concentrated network traffic. The MSM and Catalyst 6000 Family platforms support full SNMP functions, password requirements for local or Telnet access and, to reduce the costs of administering software upgrades, Flash memory allows remote downloads using Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) of new revisions of operating systems without hardware changes.

Quality of Service

The Multilayer Switch Module incorporates rich QoS capabilities enabling important services such as support for dedicated bandwidth, avoidance and management of network congestion, and traffic prioritization across the network. To support these services, the MSM implements Weighted Round Robin (WRR) queuing, Per-Queue Drop Thresholds, and Per-Flow Queuing (PFQ) to differentiate and protect mission-critical application bandwidth from other, less critical, traffic.

The Quality of Service capabilities of the multilayer switch module, when combined with CiscoAssure Policy Networking, deliver the ability to protect mission-critical traffic by allowing network administrators to easily provision and manage traffic flows in the network without sacrificing performance.

Features

Supports a wide variety of SNMP with comprehensive management.
